Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a non-statutory body created for the convenience of the students seeking admission to various National Law Universities in the country under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). An entrance test is conducted to provide a list of candidates on the basis of ‘merit-cum-preference’ to each University for admission to their UG/PG programmes, as per the eligibility, reservation and other criteria laid down under the respective statutes of the participating Universities.

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), is an all India entrance examination, conducted on rotation by 17 National Law Universities (NLUs) for admissions to their Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate degree programmes. The 17 participating NLUs in the order of their year of establishment are:

The first CLAT Core Committee consisting of Vice-Chancellors of seven participating NLUs decided that a common entrance test shall be conducted by all the participating universities on rotational basis in the order of their year of establishment. Accordingly, the first Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) was conducted in the year 2008. Preesently there are 17 NLUs participating in CLAT and following the policy of rotation, the ninth Common Law Admission Test (CLAT 2016) shall be conducted by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab.

CLAT 2016 UG Eligibility Criteria – A candidate should had obtained a Senior Secondary School/Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent certificate from a recognized Board with not less than 45% marks in aggregate (40% in case of SC and ST candidates) and should be below 20 years of age as on July 1, 2016 (22 years in case of SC and ST candidates) in order to be eligibile for CLAT 2016. Candidates who were appearing or had appeared in the 10+2 examination and are awaiting results were also eligible to appear in CLAT 2016. However, such candidates were required to have passed the qualifying examination at the time of their admission and should be able to submit proofs in support of their claims. CLAT 2016 PG Eligibility Criteria – A candidate should had obtained a LL. B/B. L. Degree or an equivalent degree from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks in aggregate (50% in case of SC and ST candidates).* The candidates who had passed the qualifying degree examination through supplementary/ compartment and repeated attempts were also eligible for appearing in the law exam, provided that such candidates had to produce the proof of having passed the qualifying examination with 55% percent marks, as the case may be, on the date of their admission or within the time allowed by the respective universities.
